The RegioTram
Trams are coming to the City of Groningen. But what exactly is the RegioTram?
The RegioTram is an initiative of the Groningen-Assen Region, the Province of Groningen and the Municipality of Groningen. Its aim is to improve the accessibility of the region and the city in a sustainable way. The intention is to construct an extensive rail network in combination with good transfer possibilities for car drivers, cyclists and bus travellers. To this end, more P&R facilities and transferia will be created to enable this change.
In terms of work, shopping, culture and other facilities, the City of Groningen fulfils an important centre function for the region. Several major public transport routes extend from Groningen into towns and villages in the region. These routes may be covered by a RegioTram in the future. The RegioTram Project is currently working on two tram lines in the city:
- Line 1 to Zernike: from the Central Station via the UMCG to the Zernike university complex in the north-west of the city
- Line 2 to Kardinge: from the Central Station via the Grote Markt to the Kardinge recreation area in the north-east of the city
A transfer point will be established on the Bloemsingel (in the CiBoGa zone) so that travellers can continue in the required direction.
